What was your original motivation for signing up?
I have tried just about every service out there for backup and sync... don't remember how I originally heard about Tilana, but it sounded exactly like what I had been looking for. I run a small business, but also work from home a lot, and have at least 3 computers. I am a big believer in off-site backup and was also looking for something that would solve my 'sync' problem between my office and home PCs.
Is your use of Tilana Reserve more of a business or personal nature, or both? Please explain.
Primarily business, but also personal. I keep all my personal records on my PC at home, but want access to them at the office. So I have one directory that I can dump things into and that gets synced between all my PCs. For business, it is primarily for off-site backup. I have a lot of redundancies built-in at the office, but if the whole office is destroyed, I want to make sure all of our business data is intact.
Have you ever had to call or email for support, and if so what was your experience?
I have e-mailed support on a few occasions, and have always received an incredibly fast response. You are probably the first company that has ever actually called me, unprompted, to make sure the problem was taken care of... I am not easily impressed, but Tilana has done a great job.
How many computers do you have on your account?
Four, my primary machine at my office, and three at home. I also have web access available and have used that on occasion when I needed to restore some files.
Do you use the sync feature? Please tell us about it.
Yes. The sync feature is the main reason I chose to go with Tilana. o I had been using Mozy for backup, which worked great, but having a solution to handle both backup and sync was ideal. I had tried BeInSync, but it hogged too much of the network. ...(Tilana) just worked! I sync important business data between my office and home, and also personal data so I have access to it at the office.
Do you use the browser based web access - if yes, how often?
I have used the web access on several occasions to restore prior versions of some files, but do not use it regularly.
Do you make use of remotely stored version history? Please tell us about it.
Yes, it has saved me a few times when I have changed a file by mistake. I have years of Quickbooks data for my business, and had to restore a prior version after having made a huge mistake with our payroll processing.
Do you use Tilana Reserve for archival, in other words do you store anything in Tilana Reserve that's no longer on your protected computers on account?
Unless there is a hardware failure I always have at least three copies of everything critical. One at the office, one at home and one at Tilana. I do not like to depend on any one single copy.
Have you ever had a case of lost data that was retrievable from Tilana Reserve?
I have used Tilana to restore files, but usually it has been because I inadvertently deleted them on one of my PCs. By keeping most of my data synced across multiple PCs, I can not remember a time when I have actually lost data due to hardware issues.
Do you have any other general comments about Tilana, the technology or the company?
I cannot say enough good things about Tilana. There is no other service that is as easy to use, and that 'just works'. And trust me, I have tried most of them over the years. The combination of backup with versioning and synchronization across PCs makes all the difference.
Even when there is a lot of data to backup, you rarely notice any network issues or slow-downs. I have had to re-format several of my PCs at home and Tilana makes it so easy to restore my critical data. I don't even bother making local copies on DVD anymore, since it is just as fast to restore everything I need from Tilana.
As for my business, it is critical that I have off-site backup and have used many different services over the years. Tilana fulfills that business need perfectly, with little impact on my network. Honestly, except when I need to grab a file, I don't even think about Tilana working in the background -- and that is a sign of a great product, that it's doing its job and I always trust it will be there when I need it most.
